The Latijnse School is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Nijmegen, with a history closely intertwined with the city’s education and public life since the fourteenth century. Throughout the many political, social, and historical transformations of the city, the building has remained a stable witness.
The city has continuously made efforts to preserve and restore the façade of the Latijnse School . In doing so, it has acquired a permanent and seemingly neutral character, built to uphold an established order of knowledge, power and faith. For a long time, the school fulfilled both educational and religious functions.
Yet within and around the building, the unruly seeps through; fragments, ghosts, and voices that disturb the apparent coherence of history and are forced to dwell in its margins. Is it possible to capture them?
By using the archive and the building of the Latijnse School as unconventional points of departure, these unruly entities are conjured up from the margins of history. They become part of a counter-narrative web of stories – an unruly cosmology – to which visitors can contribute.
This project is a collaboration between Radboud University and POST, an institution for contemporary art. It is a collective study by Lieke Wouters (Director and Curator at POST), Martine van Lubeek (Curator of the Public Programme at POST), and Sonia Kazovsky (Artist and Researcher).
